Is Tik Tok ban a blessing? Indian UGC platform discuss content Safety & Sensitivity

Tik Tok ban in India is driving users to other Indian content sharing platforms and leading to a spike in their user base. The rapidly growing popularity of the content apps in India has brought in the question of the quality, sensitivity to the Indian culture, and quality control of language in content that is being created and shared on social media. Many UGC platforms have advocated this in the past and the recent ban of TikTok, though because of its Chinese origin, has stirred a discussion among platforms that heavily contribute to content creation and distribution in the online world.

Mr. Vishal Gupta, CEO & Co-Founder, Momspresso, India’s largest UGC sharing platform for women “With social media providing opportunities for millions of internet users to create and share content with a click or two, it is extremely important to have strong oversight on what makes for entertaining content and what may be construed as offensive and regressive. At Momspresso.com, we have worked terribly hard to create a safe platform for Moms to create content in 10 different languages, in the form of text and video. Every single piece of content is moderated so that we’re able to maintain the quality and relevance of the content on our platform. This means disallowing content that may have gone viral but would be considered disrespectful, reinforcing stereotypes, irrelevant or judgemental by our audience of moms. I believe that over time, this is what builds trust in a platform and has enabled us to create India’s largest community of mothers. On the other side, brands too are looking for safe and non-controversial spaces to communicate their messages and engage with their target audience. It is no surprise therefore that Momspresso is the platform of choice for brands to engage with mothers. ”

Sunil Nair, the India CEO of Silicon Valley-based video-sharing platform Firework, highlighted that any content platform entering India needs to understand the sensitivities towards the culture and build a safer environment for creators, users, and advertisers.
